Michelle Murphy - Hand-Dyed Silk Textiles
designer's statement
I have been hand dying silk for nearly 20 years and I expect I will continue for years
to come. It is a practice that has proven to give insight, teach patience and expand my
creative vision. The wonder of nature provides an endless source of inspired pattern and
color combinations. I paint with a focused intent on beauty and with love in my heart.
Another wonderful thing about working with this luxurious material, is the way it feels
on your skin. It is incredibly soft and strong. The way silk floats over your body and
reflects the light around you is truly magical. Women respond to the feel of silk on their
skin in a sensual and natural way that is a delight to witness. This is my passion and my
future...I hope you enjoy my work as much as I do.
About the process:
To begin, I stretch white silk charmeuse like a canvas. I then apply the ground color by
hand, by painting directly on the surface of stretched silk. I use a Japanese sumi brush to
create the details of the design, using a non-toxic dye thickened with tree sap. The dyed
silk is then set with steam and washed thoroughly before being cut and sewn.
All of my silk accessories and garments are made in the USA.
