designer's statement

I am a senior at the Maryland Institute College of Art with a Fibers major, Art History minor, and Fashion concentration. I study early 20th century American fashion and apply its aesthetics to my work. My last collection was swimwear and hats inspired by World War II pinup portraits. I enjoy working with tulle, spandex, and textured fabrics such as burlap or vinyl to aid in my sculptural approach to garment building. My favorite part of being a designer is seeing how the wearer responds to the garment and how it affects their movement or character. I feel that packaging a person in a costume creates a character which in itself is a celebration of a person.
