designer's statement
Katie Coble is BFA Fibers candidate for 2010 at Maryland Institute College of Art with concentrations in experimental fashion and environmental design. She is a Kansas City native but is currently living in Baltimore. Flux, instability and the use of an object are what most interest her. She experiments with what the wearer expects out of a garment and holding the garment and the person wearing it to a different relationship than a hanger and what is being shown. The garments hold something that is not revealed until it is investigated. The further exploration into the garment activates the person within it both becoming players in the art adding performance to the garment. Katie's work borders the line between use and non-use. An object that does so many things that it can't do one thing specific. Infinite possibilities don't equal one solution, but may just pose more questions and exploration. Much of her fashions changes volumes and silhouettes and mixes very delicate feminine forms with heavier more massive ones. Function aside she also does work exploring with material manipulation and seeing what a material can form when pushed or reusing materials to form something new.
In doing Steps to the Cure I wanted to apply the work I do to the Cancer Survivor models I was given. I wanted to show their personality in the work I made for them. I wanted to make something that I thought would reflect their outlook on life and show them as the strong, beautiful, and amazing women that they are.
