designer's statement

Trained as a photographer, self-taught in illustration and design, Whitney Sherman has curated, coordinated or produced the various exhibitions among them Seamless : Culture Meets Culture at Varnish Fine Art Gallery in San Francisco; Another Voice: Political Illustration from Progressive, 1981-1999 with Patrick JB Flynn and Comics on the Verge with Paul Candler and George Ciscle, both at the Maryland Institute College of Art.


Sherman’s work has been exhibited internationally including the Design Museum/London, Axis Gallery/Tokyo and the Israel Museum and was recently included in the Rockwell Museum exhibition Picturing Health. Her USPS Breast Cancer Research stamp, the longest running postal issue ever, will be issued in 10 selected European countries increasing the over $50 million already raised for research in the US. Her illustration work has received recognition from Communication Arts, Print, Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, and the Society of Publication Designers, and she has juried for the Society’s Annual twice. Along with her studio work, she has produced a line of hand painted ceramics and a self-published a book of photographs from France called Remembering Rochefort and a series-in-progress of photographic images called Multiply, Add + Subtract. Sherman is the Chair of Illustration at MICA and the President of ICON5, the national Illustration Conference recently held in NYC.
