Sharon Green

This cannot be happening to me.

Those are the words that kept repeating in my brain as I went from ‘suspicious mammogram’ to needle biopsy to surgical biopsy. Then, late on a Friday afternoon came the call from my surgeon. The results showed that more surgery would be necessary to remove all of the cancer. A few weeks later I was scheduled for a mastectomy.

I cried.

But I was lucky. Early detection, diagnosis and treatment meant that did not need radiation or chemotherapy. I look back at the last year as just a ‘bump in the road.’

Like my fellow participants in Steps to the Cure, that ‘bump’ allowed me to have a careful look at what I was doing, and what was truly important in my life. I am fortunate to have a wonderful husband, a loving son, and new daughter-in-law. My surgeons at Northwest Hospital, Dr. Alan Davis and Dr. Michael Cohen, have used their gifts and their experience to not only make me well, but to make me feel well. My circle of friends rallied and supported me.

Now, what can I do?

Resolved:
I will let the people who are important to me know that I treasure them.
I will use my paintings to celebrate the beauty and joy of life.
I will help others traveling on the bumpy road of cancer.
