Lynda Ames
I am a native Baltimorean, graduated from The Park School and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon) in Pittsburgh.
After graduation, I was employed at The Martin Co in the art department working on the Gemini and Apollo space projects. I was the designer of the corporate Martin-Marietta logo as well as the logo for the Gemini project.
I then had my own custom jewelry business, for more than 20 years, where I designed and hand made all the pieces myself.
In 1983, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I then realized that I could no longer deal with the frivolity of jewelry. I subsequently started volunteering for the School for the Arts and from there did just about every major event in the city from the Opera Ball to Zoomerang, to name a few. My biggest accomplishment was being one of 9 people who came up with the idea of "Lifesongs" which raised more than two million dollars in ten years by bringing in major talent to the Meyerhoff and donating the proceeds to AIDS service providers in the state. Steps for the Cure will be my first modeling job to raise funds for a cause.
I am still on the board of FANS (School for the Arts), a Vice President of The Humane Society, and on the board of The Lickstein Foundation. I am a past president of Mildred Mindell Cancer Foundation and also served on the board of The Komen Foundation for a short time. I was also very active with the "Reach for Recovery" program of The American Cancer Society, probably seeing more than 200-300 patients who were in crisis.
I am married to Peter Brandwein, have a daughter, Elizabeth, and a son, Stephen, who have given me three wonderful grandchildren, one of which will be graduating from college next year! I also have a step-daughter, Tammy, who has two beautiful boys!
I am truely blessed with a wonderful family and also for the opportunity to work with the Lickstein Foundation and hopefully have some part in finding a cure for this horrible disease! I so desperately want my children and grandchildren not to have to deal with this as I have!!
