Ileen Bard

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994. I had a bilateral mastectomy and a tram flap surgery for reconstruction. No further treatment was recommended.

My mother had also been diagnosed with breast cancer. Since I have a daughter and granddaughter, I chose to undergo gene testing and, thankfully, found out that I am not carrying the BRAC 1 gene.

I am a fourteen-year survivor, and my philosophy of life has changed radically: "I dance as fast as I can." This is my motto, and every moment of every day is spent living life to the fullest. I learned to take better care of my mind and body by participating in yoga and aerobics classes. I volunteer in the Reach to Recovery program and vow to be there for anyone needing my time and energy.

The most enlightening day of the whole year for me is the Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure. When I proudly wear my pink shirt and march with all the other pink-shirted survivors, I feel proud to be a part of this wonderful group of women. Crossing the finish line with my family and friends beside me always brings tears of joy and thankfulness for all who have survived. Hopefully we will see the day when a cure is found.
