Nicole Dover
I was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer when I was 20 in August of 2006, entering my junior year at Villa Julie College. I remained in college while I endured chemotherapy, radiation and a bilateral mastectomy. I had some plastic surgery complications, therefore, more reconstructive surgery will be necessary down the road. I finished my treatments and was announced in remission in May, 2007.
I had no family history of breast cancer and do not have the BRAC 1 gene.
In August 2009, I will be a 3 year survivor!!! I graduated on time from Villa Julie with a Bachelor in Science of Business Communications.
My cancer was a blessing in disguise because it showed me the importance of life. People my age think that they have a lifetime to live, but that isn't always the case. So we really have to live for the moment and seize the day!!
I was fortunate to have great support from my college dance team, my co-workers at Red Brick Station, family and friends. They helped battle the disease with me.
I'm now a huge advocate for cancer as an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society, where I am part of the Reach to Recovery Program. I also speak as various schools and events to share my story. I'm currently employed at Kennedy Krieger Institute at the Fairmount campus as a special education program aide. I plan to continue my education to earn my MSW (masters in social work).
