Amy Gertz
At the time of my diagnosis, I was 46 years old. I was a happily married, suburban housewife with three wonderful daughters. My journey started with a tiny microcalcification, which was taken out, biopsied and diagnosed as breast cancer. After the initial shock, I had many more tests and biopsies. I was given a crash course introduction into the world of cancer, and I wondered if my life would ever be the same again. Of course, it isn’t. You can’t go through such a life altering experience and expect to come out of it unchanged.
My life spiraled into a series of testing, five operations (including mastectomy,) chemotherapy and reconstruction. I was very fortunate to have had a great team of physicians; Drs. Michael Schultz, Bernie Chang, Stephen Glasser, and John Fetting. They are my heroes. They walked me through each phase of treatment with tireless patience and endless compassion.
Today, three and a half years later, I take nothing for granted and try to live each day to the fullest. I am very fortunate to have had the support of a loving family and friends to help me make it through this experience. I look forward to a healthy future and treasure each day that I have with those that I love.
