The Models

Damia Thomas

When I was asked to write a bio, I was really at a loss. It seems too strange to actually think about my experience and write about it. The experience is something I want to forget about, and I want to move beyond it. Yet, I have found strength during every step of my healing process, although it seems never ending.

I was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer on October 20, 2008, with no history of breast cancer in my family. I immediately went into to “combat mode.” There was no way cancer was going to take me away from my 11-year-old daughter without a fight. There was no other option but to fight, remain optimistic at all costs, and win. On November 20, 2008, I said goodbye to both breasts when I had a bilateral mastectomy, and I embraced my new breasts on June 8, 2009. Every day is a step in the right direction, and I have found peace and a stronger will to survive each day!

There is a saying: “Be careful what you ask for, because you just might get it.” Well, that saying is unbelievably true! For years, I prayed and meditated to become a more confident woman and professional. As the years progressed, I felt confidence growing with every experience, but my survivorship has been the experience that has made my confidence soar to a higher level. I can be honest and deal with people now in a way that makes me feel free. This is my time to shine, and I know I have the strength to handle any challenge before me.
