Anthony Aversa
Hi, my name is Tony Aversa and I am a 58 year old male breast cancer survivor. I
am a CPA employed by the Anne Arundel County Office of Finance in Annapolis. I
have been married for 27 years to my amazing wife, Diane, and blessed with two great
children, Christopher, carving himself quite a successful career in the logistics industry
and Caitlin, a sophomore criminal justice major and soccer player at York College in
Pennsylvania.
My initial reaction to my diagnosis was surprise, although I was aware men could be
struck with breast cancer. I had no serious health issues prior to the diagnosis and kept
myself in pretty good physical condition, saw my doctor yearly, never smoked, tried to
eat right - you know did all the right things. So, when the diagnosis came through, there
was an element of, well so much for that - I should have had more "fun".
After receiving all the relevant details from Dr. Schnaper and how we were going to
proceed, I remember thinking fine, lets get it done. I have always been involved in
sports. I had coached and refereed soccer for many years and continue to do so. My
competitive nature kicked in and said lets take this on. I have a good team, lets just go
beat it. I have a good friend that is a cancer survivor and also involved in sports and he
told me he has the same approach with his illness. Along those lines, I am a supporter
of Lance Armstrongs LiveStrong Foundation, as his direct approach to his illness and
everything else he does with cancer programs is an inspiration to me.
I dont dwell on the illness. I still work out, coach and ref and am determined to do what
I want to do with my life and not be defined by my cancer diagnosis. It is something I
have to deal with and I am very fortunate to have the support of a great family and some
great friends.
I am very thankful for my treatment at GBMC. I ended up at the Berman Comprehensive
Breast Care Center from a patient recommendation from one of my wifes coworkers. It
was a true blessing. Dr. Schnaper was wonderful and Dr. Celano has been great to work
with. I am very appreciative of their talents and efforts - Thank You.
