Marlene King
Marlene was born in Jamaica, West Indies and moved to Washington, DC with her family
when she was 13 years old. Marlene now lives with her husband, of twenty-five years, Pastor
Eric King, I, three sons Eric, II, Bryant and Aston, and a granddaughter Taylor in Northwest
Baltimore.
Having no family history of heart disease or breast cancer; at the age of 39 she suffered a heart
attack and at the age of 49 (in April 2008), she was given the diagnosis that she has breast
cancer (DCIS).
Over the years Marlene has been a dedicated volunteer and representative with The American
Red Cross, The American Heart Association, and The American Cancer Society. She has
advocated for women’s health through sharing her personal health stories in the Baltimore Sun,
as well as a guest on various local television stations. She serves as the secretary for Sisters
Network Baltimore and is certified by the American Cancer Society Breast Health Educator.
Marlene is an Executive Administrative Coordinator at the University Of Maryland School Of
Medicine in the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science. She is currently
enrolled as a student at Morgan State University where she is completing course work for the
Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations.
Marlene is first Lady of New Life and St. Matthews UM Churches were she serves on several
ministries. Marlene wishes for people to know that she is a Woman of God who is also true to
herself. She lives her life by the first two commandments "Love the Lord God" and "Love your
Neighbor as Yourself".
She recently received the news that her cancer has returned and will have to undergo a
mastectomy.
Marlene is an optimist. There are those who expect for the experiences she has had to bring
her down; however, they fail to understand that life can be similar to a "hit and" run accident
leaving you unable to get up - BUT - you keep getting up!
