In August of 1995, after having had a repeat mammogram, the radiologist told me "everything's fine;come back in a year Two weeks later, I received a phone call telling me to come back as soon as possible for yet another mammogram. That day they did a mammogram, an ultrasound and a core biopsy and all the radiologist would say is "I'm very concerned." This was the Friday of Labor Day weekend and I told the doctors that I had to know the results the next day (Saturday) because I did not want to be kept in suspense throughout the long holiday weekend. The call came and the results were positive. My husband and kids were devastated, especially when the films from the year before also showed breast cancer. I am a very positive person and I always believed that I would beat this disease, even though my surgeon told me it was a very large tumor. On September 19, 1995, I had a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction. Shortly after, I started four rounds of chemo. My husband and my friends kept me company during each round and I realized how lucky I was, and thankfully, still am. Even to this day, I say that my best year was 1995. I was blessed with my first grandchild and I survived breast cancer that year. I am not just a positive person, but a very, very thankful one as well.
